Alexx Mack’s newest single is evidence you don’t need flirty, suggestive tunes to be intriguing. Genuine vulnerability is widely felt, and, as we all understand, the marking of a great pop song is making something that interest the masses. Mack’s “Whatever I Want” is a testament to that. She prospers in toning down the party anthem vibes that pulsed through her launching EP, Like We’re Famous. “Whatever I Desired” discovers her at her most intimate, with bass tracks that bounce in a large synth landscape that works to create something sonically warm. The “ohs” that follow the chorus take the song to superb brand-new heights. For a tune a confident as it is, Mack tells us it was born from heartbreak, from which she’s “had the ability to be the most truthful thus far.” She goes on to describe the importance of the song’s album art, which includes Mack on a leash held by a hidden human, stating:
No matter how lovely a love can be, no matter just how much you take into it, there is an uncontrollable universal force holding you back from it ever being the best love with someone. The tune itself is a narrative for a relationship driven by the desire for something that feels almost prohibited, and, in the end, comprehending that it isn’t really, in truth, a healthy love.
